Women and science: Cristina Zanini’s experience in STEM

On February 11, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an opportunity to recognize the fundamental contribution of women to scientific and technological progress.

Among them, Cristina Zanini is a shining example of passion and determination.

Her journey into science started with a spark, a moment of inspiration that shaped her career. Today, with BioAir now fully integrated into IWT Pharma, Cristina is part of our team, bringing her extensive experience in Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and contributing to the development of cutting-edge solutions for personalized medicine and biotechnological research.

Cristina, what led you to choose chemistry?
"I was immediately fascinated by pure chemistry: the entropy governing it gave me a sense of order and structure, in contrast with the chaos of youth. Atoms and molecules, in their endless dance, create the complexity of our world. Simply beautiful!"

When did you realize that science would be your future?
"Studying is essential, but it was my first job that confirmed I had made the right choice. I started with a research grant at a pediatric hospital, where I could put my theoretical knowledge into practice through my first experiments and analyses. That was when I understood that I would never stop learning."

What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman in a technical field?
"The greatest challenge, and one I am still working on, is believing in myself and my abilities. Many leadership positions are still held by men, making it easy to doubt one’s worth. But self-confidence is essential to move forward."

Has there been a person who particularly inspired you on your journey?
"Marie Curie has always been my source of inspiration. Her studies on radioactivity and the sacrifices she made in a time when science was almost exclusively male-dominated greatly contributed to modern advancements. She is a true role model."

How do you see your field evolving in the coming years?
"I’m lucky to work in advanced therapies, a field in full evolution that is shaping the future. Personalized medicine will undoubtedly bring groundbreaking results, especially in cancer treatment. Finally!"

Is there a particular technology or innovation that excites you today?
"Technological innovation is the key to transforming research into real-world solutions. No science exists without technology. I always try to look ahead, fascinated by the idea that, no matter how complex our challenges may seem, science and technology will always provide answers. Unfortunately, some use science destructively, but I firmly believe that good science will always be one step ahead."

What advice would you give to young women pursuing a STEM career?
"Science allows us to be free and independent. We are fortunate to live in a part of the world where women can study and work. No matter the path they choose, this opportunity should never be wasted."

What is the most important lesson you have learned in your professional journey?
"Never think you’ve learned everything: we are always on a journey!"
